Dying to Live – Week 8

by on February 25, 2015

From January through Easter we are doing a church-wide study of the Gospel of Mark. Each week we distribute study questions to help lead you into discussions with your family and friends. Below are the questions from week 8.

  • In Matthew 16, when Peter acknowledged that Jesus is the Messiah, Jesus said Peter had to have that information revealed by God, not revealed by flesh and blood. How did you come to realize who Jesus really is?
  • What are some of the names for or descriptions of Jesus that mean the most to you? Has that changed over time?
  • Jesus warned the disciples not to tell anyone He was the Messiah. Why might Jesus still have wanted His identity kept quiet?
  • The disciples told Jesus that the people thought He was John, Elijah or one of the other prophets come back to life, indicating that many believed in the concept of resurrection. Why might it have been so difficult for them to even think about Jesus dying and rising again?
  • Jesus tells his disciples that anyone who wants to follow Him, must “deny himself and take up his cross and follow.” How do you think the disciples would have understood that statement before they knew that Jesus would be crucified and raised? How do you understand that verse today?
  • How is it possible to save your life by losing it, or lose your life by saving it?
  • What parts of your life would be most difficult for you to give up in order to follow Jesus?
